File Sizes and stuff

If you get your work scanned or digitized before bringing it to us, you need to consider the size of the scan required for your final print.

We can print from files saved pretty much in any resolution from 150 dpi and up. We recommend that the file size is either 180 or 240 dpi at actual size. Why not 300 dpi? - Well commercial four color presses usually ask for 300 dpi files but then they are not going to print them at 40" x 40". The printers actually print in 1440 or 2880 dpi 180 and 240 are exact fractions of printer resolution. In some rare cases 360 dpi will print slightly better in very, very detailed images and when you look at a 1/10 of an inch image area with a magnifying glass you can see a little difference but . .

Examples of file size as it relates to image sizes is listed below:

Image Size Resolution File Size
8 x 10" 180 dpi 7.8MB
8 x 10" 240 dpi 13.8 MB
34 x 46" 180 dpi 152 MB
34 x 46" 240 dpi 270 MB
36" x 46" 360 dpi 608 MB
not recommended

We strongly recommend that you talk to us before undertaking your own scanning so we can advise on the best methods.

Note:
Now that we have stated "technical" sizes, we have managed to print some extraordinary images from low resolution files (consumer digital cameras for example) send us the file and we will see what magic we can work.
