Our Digital Presses We have five Epson printers which can print up to 64" wide by any length. The 11880 is a 64" wide printer from
Epson The 9800 is a 44" wide printer from Epson inspired by past-generation of photographic printing technology, the latest 44-inch Epson Stylus Pro 9800 professional wide-format printers incorporate forward-thinking designs with a breakthrough new 8-color ink technology, resulting in a final print of uncompromising quality. Epson UltraChrome K3™ ink technology represents a defining moment in the history of ink jet printing. Based on our newest-generation of pigment ink, Epson UltraChrome K3 ink incorporates eight new color pigments, including a new three-level black technology, dramatically raising the bar for professional color and black and white prints. The 9600 is a 44" wide printer from Epson and has a extraordinarily wide color gamut and is excellent for photographic and fine detail work. We use an advanced RIP which further increases the color gamut and we have color profiles for most paper and canvas we use. The 9600 can print excellent monochrome and toned monochrome images. For scanning photographs and transparencies it's hard to beat our IMACON IRIS Printers The last one "Iris" retired in 2008 (awwwww, we are soooo sad...) At one time we had five IRIS 3047 printers, an original value of over half a million dollars, but to be honest we bought the first one for list price ($125,000) and the remaining ones we purchased used for a lot less. Our original and much loved printer "Iris" is still on display in the studio, as are a lot of example prints made on this amazing machine. The legendary IRIS 3047 ink jet printers are no longer manufactured and I think we were one of the last fine art print studios to keep ours running. It was the only ink jet printer that could produces a variable droplet size of up to 32 different variations, and with a droplet size of 5 microns. While it was more difficult and more expensive to set up than other printers it had some advantages over more modern printers. The printer uses piezoelectric crystal technology to produce four million ink droplets per second. The droplets are less than the size of a human blood corpuscle. This results in beautiful detail and a subtle color range. One of the main advantages of the IRIS was that is could print on practically anything including paper, canvas, cotton, silk, leather, wood veneer and many other substrates. One of the disadvantages was that the color gamut was pretty narrow and we had to work very hard and produce many proofs to get good results. Color management was seriously lacking! But needs spur invention and we have very successfully printed on a wide range of curious materials/substrates using our Epson printers including hand made paper and silks. We retired our Epson 9500 in 2007. |
