Printing Notes
IRIS
The IRIS is the most difficult to print with because the color management is totally by eye.
Pros:
The IRIS Can print on practically any material that can be wrapped around the drum including hand made paper, silk, rice papers etc.
Incredible rich blacks on certain papers
Cons:
Narrow color gamut except on certain papers
No color management, proofing can be difficult
Ink is dye based and not water resistant
Epson 9500
Pro:
Good color gamut
Can print on some rice papers and specialty papers but works best with coated inkjet papers
Water resistant pigments, very durable
Con:
Color management limited
Not recommended for black and white (because of metamerism issues)
Epson 9600
Pro:
Amazing color gamut
Great color management, little or no proofing required
Can print completely neutral black or we can tone or split tone monochrome images
Water resistant pigments, very durable
Con:
Only prints on coated papers
Not recommended for glossy paper
Epson 9800
Similar to the 9600 but with three black inks and prints well on glossy paper
We also have a traditional printmaker around the corner from our Philadelphia office and can offer combination digital and etching, woodblock or linocut (it’s not inexpensive) or if you think you would like to work with a traditional master printmaker let me know and I will put you in touch.
Recomendations
For general work I would recommend printing on the 9600 as we have the color management perfected on all of the papers we support. The 9800 is very new and some of our color profiles leave a little to be desired (we are working on it!)
For the purposed of Scott’s project we can offer the same price on any printer and will work with you to make the print the best it can be.
The price is based on making 40 prints with a paper size of 13” x 19”
There is no surcharge for any papers or heavy ink coverage
